At the age of 91, Chad Morgan OAM is the world’s only continuously performing entertainer who is still plying his trade.
Up until very recently the Sheik of Scrubby Creek has maintained a gruelling schedule, touring constantly, and for more years than he can recall, completing a punishing 10-day stint at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. This was regrettably cancelled when Chad received advice from his doctor not to proceed with the commitment due to his deteriorating health condition. He has chronic arthritis throughout his body.

While Chad is still well enough to attend a performance and share a song or two, he will. So his friends are gathering at Twin Towns Services Club from 2pm on Sunday, April 21 for a concert to remember.

Chad Morgan’s Farewell to Australia. The incomparable compere, Nick Erby will introduce his good mates Terry Gordon Oam, Vicky O’Keefe, John McSweeney, Johnny Greenwood, Dean Perrett, Jeff Brown, Chad Morgan Jnr, Lindsay Waddington, Dennis Morgan, Kylie Hogan and the incredible band – Michel Rose, Gus Fenwick and Doug Gallacher. There are few, if any, who can recall Chad’s earliest performances, as they too are now reaching their golden years. The thing with Chad Morgan fans is it’s usually a multi-generational thing. Great-grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers, daughters, and their daughters will invariably become Chad Morgan fans if they grew up in an ordinary, everyday house in Australia in the 1950s and ’60s. His greatest satisfaction is in seeing a row of happy little faces in the audience singing along with his songs.

The Sheik rose to prominence in 1952 on Australia’s Amateur Hour, becoming the radio talent search’s most successful runner-up in the competition’s history. This was the first of many accolades to come his way in a career that’s spanned seven decades … and counting.

The ultimate recognition any country music artist in Australasia can earn is elevation to the Roll of Renown. Chad received this honour in 1987. Eleven years previously, his palm prints were placed in cement at Tamworth’s Hands of Fame, where he joins more than 300 of his fellow artists and friends in one of the Country Music Capital’s most popular tourist attractions. His quirky single, The Sheik of Scrubby Creek, sent hitmakers like Doris Day and Bing Crosby scurrying down the charts so he could take over his rightful place at the top.

At last, the Sheik of Scrubby Creek has revealed the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth!

Written by freelance journalist, author and sub-editor Anna Rose, Chad Morgan: Seventy Years In The Making took almost two years to complete. It was created as the author interviewed the Sheik over countless sessions, with tears, laughter and lots of music in the telling.

Endless research has failed to uncover another artist anywhere in the world who has recorded, toured and performed continuously for a 70-year period, so the Sheik is still breaking records at almost 90.

The 271-page tome covers Chad’s dirt-poor childhood through to fame and (not so much) fortune on Australia’s Amateur Hour, arguably the most successful runner-up in the history of the long-running national radio talent search. It then follows his life to the present day.

There are hundreds of photographs contributed by some of the nation’s finest lensmen and women and many other family- or fan-captured snaps. There are also a few rare pictures of the Morgan clan which mean the world to Chad.

Chad Morgan is back with his brand new album ‘Quarantined’. Any fan of Chad would know that it would take more than a virus to keep this old dog down!

Chad has really been missing the stage and playing live for all his fans, so he thought he would put together a new album to keep himself from going mad while in isolation at home. Songs for young and old, some old songs and some new ones. A special collection of 24 songs to keep you laughing through these tough and unique times.

Chadwick William “Chad” Morgan was born in Wondai, Queensland in 1933 and raised by his grandparents. He was discovered through Australia’s Amateur Hour radio program and started recording with Regal Zonophone ( a subsidiary of EMI ).

Chad, known fondly as “The Sheik of Scrubby Creek”, released his first album in 1952 and is renowned for his vaudeville style of comic country and western songs, and goofy stage persona. Chad is the ultimate comic of Australian country music. He is instantly recognizable with his unique trademark – Those Teeth!!

Tex Morton once described Chad as the only original country music artist in Australia. When Gordon Parsons came up with the pub with no beer, Chad’s the bloke who wrote the words down and even one verse of his own. Chad has toured extensively, including the Slim Dusty Show, the All Star Western Show, Normie Rowe, Mental As Anything and his own Chad Morgan Show.

He was dubbed the clown prince of comedy by Slim Dusty. Chad has platinum and gold album sales, and is one of Australia’s most popular and loved country music artists. He has played all over Australia in all of manner of places, from tents to trucks to clubs and pubs, festivals, the Sydney Opera House – even a touring circus!!

Chad portrays Aussie culture warts and all – and we love him for it. The dry humour that he uses to send up our beloved institutions and customs have thousands of people laughing at themselves every time they hear him sing.

Chad still has an enormous and devoted following and is constantly touring the country. Since 1952 Chad’s been performing a unique array of comic country and western songs such as ‘The Sheik Of Scrubby Creek’, ‘I’m My Own Grandpa’, ‘The Shotgun Wedding’, ‘Double Decker Blowflies’, ‘There’s Life In The Old Dog Yet’, and many more.

Chad was inducted into the TAMWORTH HANDS OF FAME in 1979. The ROLL OF RENOWN in 1987, the KEMPSEY LIVING LEGEND AWARD in 2002 and the ORDER OF AUSTRALIA MEDAL (OAM) in 2004. Chad was the first person to be honoured with the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD at the 2010 CMAA Awards.

Chad Morgan is one of the last pioneers of Australian Country Music, and is still very active, touring Australia bringing his comical songs to fans of three-generations. The man who has been making people laugh for more than five decades should be crowned King of Australian Country Music Comedy.
